Project Summary Sugarcane plays an important role in the livelihood of farmers in the farming system of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Its area in the province is almost static and hovers around 100,000 hectares annually. Its cultivation is mainly concentrated in Peshawar Valley consisting of Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Malakand & Khyber which can be rightly called the northern belt and Bannu, DI Khan and Tank which can be named the southern sugarcane belt. It engages a significant amount of manpower in the plantation, harvesting, post-harvest processing and marketing. With a production of 56 million tonnes(Crop Statistic, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2016-18) it feeds 7 sugar mills and over 20,000 ghaanis in the province.
Project Detail The objectives of the project are in line with the overall objectives of agriculture sector. The specific goals and objectives of the sector as set in the Agriculture Policy of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2015-2025 are; • To enhance sector productivity and competitiveness by activities such as improving the technology dissemination and trade promotion; • To address food security and incomes needs of the vulnerable sections of the population and targeted actions are needed to improve food security, reduce poverty and enhance the role of women. • To improve national resource management, adaptation to climate change and disaster risk management. The main objective of the project is to enhance per acre sugarcane productivity to secure food security for the growing population in the province. Following are the specific objectives of the project: • To provide healthy and quality Sugarcane seed to sugarcane growers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. • Timely availability of 3920 Nos. of bags fertilizers (Phosphorous & Potash) to the farming community on 50% subsidized rate. • Expansion in mechanized farming by providing 549 Nos. of different machineries (Chiesel plough, early hillup implement, planters with band fertilizer bin, billet planter, granule pesticides applicator &lazer levellers) to the farmerson experimental and demonstration purposes to convince the farmers regarding mechanized farming for boosting up the per acre yield of sugarcane crop. • Transfer of improved technology dissemination through laying out of 700 acre demo on chip bud technology & 200 acre of demo plots on September plantation, 25 Nos. of FFS, distribution of 102500 slogans, brochures & crop calendar , 45.00 million of text SMSs / robo calls 01 No. of documentary.
